Via dell'Amore: Tickets, Booking and the Walk Itself

The path under your feet

The Via dell'Amore is trail 592-1 (SVA2) of the Sentiero Azzurro, graded Turistico, the park's easiest grade. It runs just over one kilometre, carved along the cliff above the water, with the sea on one side and the rock face on the other. There is almost no climb to speak of, which is exactly why it carries the easiest grading in the whole park network.

The park grades every trail Turistico, Escursionistico or Esperto, and this is the flagship of the tourist grade. Compare it with the next segments, Manarola to Corniglia at 1 hour 15 minutes and the Esperto-graded stretches beyond, and you can see why this is the walk nearly everyone starts with.

Direction and timing

The path is one-way. You enter at Riomaggiore and exit at Manarola, and only authorised categories such as residents may walk it in reverse. The park's trail-network table gives an official time of 25 minutes, while the park's own dedicated Via dell'Amore page says about 30 minutes.

Both figures come from the same park, so we quote the range. Set aside 25 to 30 minutes of pure walking and considerably more once you stop for the views, which most people do.

Entry times and staff

You enter within your booked time band. The park's own FAQ notes that some tolerance on entry times is possible, and that information staff are present along the route. That is helpful if a train delay pushes you late, but do not bank on it, because seats per band are limited.

Groups of up to 30 people need advance booking and advance payment. If your train is delayed, head straight to the Riomaggiore entrance and ask the staff on site rather than waiting to be found.

Who walks free or on special terms

Several categories skip the standard ticket entirely. Residents of Riomaggiore, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare walk free without booking, in both directions. La Spezia province residents get regulated access like the park trails, free outside the booked bands.

Second-home owners and former Riomaggiore residents get free access without booking on self-certification. Riomaggiore Guest Card holders get a reduced rate for their whole stay, and guests of CETS-label accommodation get a reduced rate with access even outside their booked slot. If you are a standard visitor, assume the card plus booking route applies to you.

Where the path sits

The Via dell'Amore is part of the Cinque Terre National Park and of the UNESCO World Heritage property inscribed in 1997, site 826, recognised as a cultural landscape of villages and terraced coast. The cliff position means the park monitors the route closely. Status changes with weather and maintenance, and the park publishes live, dated updates, so check before you travel rather than trusting any printed claim.

That live-status habit matters more here than on the other Sentiero Azzurro segments, since the path runs directly along an active cliff face.

The walk itself costs you 25 to 30 minutes. The question is what you build around it. The table below gives three realistic routings and what each one drops.
